Building Futures Through Education: Human Appeal Marks International Literacy Day

As the world commemorates International Literacy Day on September 8th, Human Appeal reaffirms its commitment to building self-sustaining development programs to fight poverty and social injustice through education and skills development. Across conflict-affected regions, where displacement and devastation have shattered education systems and upended millions of lives, that conviction is taking shape one reclaimed future at a time.

Education as a Foundation for Recovery

In many conflict zones, years of violence have left schools shuttered and displaced students and teachers alike. Human Appeal is dedicated to rebuilding resilient education systems in communities emerging from conflict. Through school rehabilitation, educator training, and vocational programs, Human Appeal helps restore access to education while equipping people with the skills and confidence to rebuild their futures and contribute to their communities' recovery.

Meeting Students' Most Basic Needs

Human Appeal’s Back to School initiative aims to meet student’s most basic needs in Gaza, Sudan, Pakistan and more. In many communities, families must sacrifice to provide essential school supplies and meals for children in school. The Back-to-School Kit program equips students with essential supplies, removing a critical barrier to classroom participation.

Simultaneously, the Feed a Child program ensures students are nourished and ready to learn. By addressing both supply and nutrition gaps, Human Appeal removes the obstacles that prevent children from accessing quality education. Because every child deserves the chance to learn, not just the chance to attend school.

Rebuilding Resilience Through Vocational Training

In Syria, Human Appeal is assisting people in rebuilding their futures through vocational skills. Human Appeal's Syria team has worked to provide vocational training in key trades: pastry production and mobile phone maintenance in Azaz, Arabic majlis and furniture design in Harim, and solar energy systems maintenance in Kafr Karmin. As trainees completed their courses and proved their commitment, the top 50 successful graduates received in-kind grants, a concrete investment in their ability to launch small businesses and put their newly acquired skills to work. These grants represent more than financial support; they represent a belief that ordinary Syrians, when given the right tools and training, can become economically independent, create sustainable income for their families, and build a more stable future. One by one, across multiple communities, trainees are opening shops, starting production lines, and reclaiming agency over their own recovery.

At least 739 million youth and adults worldwide still lack basic literacy skills as of 2024. Human Appeal is working to ensure that people in conflict zones are not left behind.
