It is almost impossible to imagine the harshness of winter in Gaza right now. Streets, drains, buildings – all essential to keeping warm and avoiding flooding and disease – are now flattened. Those who survive the bombings face the threat of death by winter, facing hunger, icy temperatures, and the spread of sickness without a proper shelter. 60% of homes in Gaza are damaged or destroyed, and a staggering 85% of people have been forced out of their homes.
Some have found refuge in schools, but many do not have proper shelter, or any kind of heating, clean water, or electricity.
A lack of food and clean water have pushed prices soaring, trapping families in a vicious cycle of being unable to afford basic necessities as their prices continue to rise.
In Pakistan, half of families live below the poverty line. Last year’s devastating floods left families struggling to survive after having lost crops, livestock and homes in the flooding.
Cyclical patterns of extreme rain and flooding in the past years mean that the area we’re working in is projected to experience heavy rains and cold weather this winter, putting the most vulnerable families at risk of sickness, isolation, and hunger.
