Afghanistan’s deadly 6.3 magnitude earthquakes struck early on 7 October about 20 miles from the city of Herat.
Since then, a series of strong aftershocks have rocked the region, including 4 powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquakes, including one on 15 October, eight days since the first tremor.
The situation in Afghanistan remains dire, with over 500 individuals still unaccounted for and the death toll expected to increase as subsequent aftershocks unfold. Tragically, more than 2,000 lives were claimed by the initial dual earthquakes, striking just 30 minutes apart.
These devastating events have also resulted in the damage or destruction of 1,320 homes. Shockingly, over 90% of the casualties were women and children, as the quakes occurred during daytime when many men were working outdoors.
Reports from state officials indicate that at least 20 villages have been leveled, with people buried beneath the debris. The ongoing aftershocks continue to shake Herat, demanding an urgent response to deliver life-saving aid as swiftly as possible.
Families have not only lost their loved ones but also their homes, reduced to rubble. Infrastructure, including road networks and mobile phone towers, has been severely impacted, while challenging weather conditions further complicate rescue efforts.
A health worker in Herat grimly noted, "We are struggling with the very high number of injured people. I have not counted dead bodies. Our morgue is out of capacity."
Providing essential relief: Food and shelter
Human Appeal is on the ground in Herat, working tirelessly to provide hot meals and tents to families affected by the earthquake. Thousands of people have been displaced and are in urgent need of support to survive the challenging days and weeks ahead, particularly as they prepare for the approaching winter.
To date, we have distributed over 1,750 hot meals and tents to families affected by the earthquake. We appeal for your continued support to assist those who face the harrowing prospect of additional earthquakes.
Afghanistan is already grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, marked by 93% of families experiencing food insecurity and over a third of the population struggling to meet their basic needs. Economic collapse, climate-related drought, and conflict have left one in three people hungry, while 2 million children suffer from malnutrition. Thousands have been displaced due to conflict, and the country also contends with the challenges posed by COVID-19 and a healthcare system teetering on the edge of collapse.
Your generosity can help us provide life-saving humanitarian aid to the people of Afghanistan. Please, donate now and make a difference in their lives. Your support is urgently needed.
