Survivors of Afghanistan’s earthquakes need food and shelter

After being struck by Afghanistan’s deadliest earthquake in 20 years, families in the province of Herat then faced five more powerful earthquakes, which have left entire villages in ruins and over 1,400 people dead, mostly women and children. Now, they face the bitter temperatures of winter amid the ruins of their homes.

£11 provides hot meals for two earthquake survivors.

£33 supports a family of six with nourishing hot meals.

£100 supplies an emergency kit, including vital food, water, and medical aid.

£210 offers emergency shelter to displaced families, protecting them from the elements.

Afghanistan was hit by two deadly 6.3-magnitude earthquakes, followed by a series of powerful aftershocks, causing devastation to homes, communications, and roads. More than 1,400 people were killed, 10,000 homes have been destroyed, and more than 20,000 are badly damaged.

Our ongoing response

Human Appeal is in Herat, distributing tents and hot meals to families who have survived the earthquake. A staggering 157,000 people need help this winter as they face hunger and sub-zero temperatures without a home to protect them.

Afghanistan is already grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis. food insecurity, 93% of families are food insecure and over a third of the population struggling to meet their basic needs. Economic collapse, climate-related drought, and conflict have left one in three people hungry, while 2 million children are malnourished. Thousands have been displaced due to conflict, while the country is also struggling with COVID-19 and a health-care system on the brink of collapse.

For families who have lost their home, hot meals are a lifeline. Without a kitchen or food storage, they’re unable to prepare hot food. Each hot meal provides a nourishing local meal, helping a person to stay full, warm and energized.
