Why we run: our Orphan Sponsorship Appeal

Why we run: our Orphan Sponsorship Appeal

There are over 150 million orphans worldwide. 5,700 children become orphans every single day — to war, climate crises, poverty, disease and lack of medical care.

When you sponsor an orphan with Human Appeal, you enable a child to go to school, eat well, and stay safe, warm and healthy. £40 provides an orphaned child with food, shelter and healthcare for a month. £480 sponsors an orphan for a whole year.

“I and the one who looks after an orphan and provides for him, will be in Paradise like this” — and he held his index and middle fingers together. [Sahih Bukhari]

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the Muslim Charity Run?

The Muslim Charity Run is East London Mosque's signature community event, bringing people together through fitness, unity and fundraising. Held as a 5K run at Victoria Park and Mile End Stadium in London, the event welcomes runners and supporters of all ages and abilities to raise funds for approved Muslim charities. Previously known as Run 4 Your Mosque, it continues to unite families, volunteers and local organisations for a day of charity, community and wellbeing.

  • When and where does it take place?

Brothers — Sunday 13 September 2026, Victoria Park, London.

Sisters — Saturday 26 September 2026, Mile End Stadium, London.

  • Who can take part?

Brothers' event: open to men and boys of all ages, whether running, walking, volunteering or supporting from the sidelines. Men and boys only.

Sisters' event: open to women and girls of all ages, whether running, walking, volunteering or supporting from the sidelines. Women and girls only.

  • Is there a registration fee?

£10 per individual runner, which includes a custom-branded tee, training sessions, a runner number and a finisher medal on race day.

  • What charities benefit from the event?

The run supports multiple Muslim charities, local and international — including Human Appeal's Orphan Sponsorship Appeal. Each runner chooses a charity to fundraise for, and all approved charities participating in the event benefit directly from proceeds raised. Previous years have supported dozens of causes through collective effort.

  • What can participants expect on the day?

A 5K run, medals for all finishers, warm-up sessions led by organisers, children's activities (bouncy castle, bungee run), a wide range of stalls, and a community atmosphere with volunteers, spectators and families present.

  • How do I prepare and train?

Participants are encouraged to train in advance and prepare for the 5K at their own pace. Whether walking, jogging or running, regular practice will help build confidence, improve fitness and make the day even more enjoyable.

  • How can I fundraise?

Once you register, you'll receive an online fundraising page linked to your chosen charity. Participants are encouraged to gather donations from friends, family and community members to support their cause.

  • I'm not running. How can I still help?

Volunteer — join event-day teams: marshalling, water stations, kit distribution, medical support and more.

Donate — support participants directly or contribute to the East London Mosque or specific charities.

Cheer — come along and make the day vibrant. There's plenty to enjoy off-track, from stalls and refreshments to cheering on the runners.

  • What happens if the weather is bad?

The event runs regardless of rain or shine. In 2024, around 1,500 runners braved rainy conditions and still raised over £150,000. The community spirit and logistics are designed to support participants come rain or nice weather.

Don't dream it. Do it.
