Today, the 19th of August, marks World Humanitarian Day. At Human Appeal we’re reflecting on the resilience of communities living through times of crisis, and recognising those who, like us, dedicate their lives to helping others.
This year’s theme is ‘strengthening global solidarity and empowering local communities’. This lies at the heart of our own mission at Human Appeal: here for every human. For more than 30 years, our work has been guided by the principle of serving humanity - helping people in need in the most vulnerable circumstances, and working with international partners to deliver this.
Solidarity in action: 7.5 million meals for Gaza
Over the last few years alone, our team has delivered over 7.5 million hot meals to the people of Gaza, where food insecurity has reached devastating levels amid the ongoing conflict. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, the commitment of local partners and the dedication of our team on the ground, families and individuals have been able to share a hot meal despite unimaginable challenges.
Local collaboration: 12,000 meals for flood-ridden Pakistan
Most recently our team has just deployed its latest initiative of aid: 12,000 hot meals to those affected by the flash floods which have struck Pakistan, displacing an estimated 600,000 people. In partnership with the local Provincial Disaster Management Authority and local government we have been able to reach those most affected as climate change continues to wreak devastation across the country.
Long-term sustainable development
Beyond emergency initiatives for humanitarian disasters, at Human Appeal we know that the work doesn’t stop there. We believe in pairing urgent relief with long-term projects that support sustainable rebuilding among vulnerable communities: from orphan sponsorship, livelihoods programmes, building hospitals and creating clean water systems, our work is committed to long-term development to empower local communities.
Humanitarian work is not without its casualties, and sadly we too have experienced this within our teams. That’s why this World Humanitarian Day, we’re honouring not only the people affected by ongoing crises around the world, but the frontline workers like our own who risk their lives to deliver aid to those in need in the most dire of circumstances.
We’re incredibly grateful for the support of our donors, without whom we wouldn’t be able to carry out this vital work. Whether through donations, fundraisers or raising awareness, we are all capable of taking small actions to create lasting impact.
