Charity fundraising can take many forms. From bake sales to dog walks, each and every attempt is about bringing communities together to support a cause. At Human Appeal, we work closely with a number of individuals and corporate partners to support our fundraising efforts. Many of these initiatives are long-term and take place annually, whilst others are led by inspiring individuals who have selected Human Appeal as their charity of choice.
Most recently, a local businessman in the Northeast region of Newcastle, Philip Pugh, chose to raise funds for Human Appeal by taking on an unexpected challenge. With members of our team, including Sammera Ali, Head of Global Corporate Relations, alongside a group of almost 100 others, Phil and this team took part in Concept2’s ‘World Longest Continual Row.
Taking place in the centre of Newcastle at The Gate leisure centre, the team carried out continuous rowing in 30-minute intervals per person, starting with Human Appeal’s own Sammera Ali. Starting on Thursday the 24th April, the team rowed for four consecutive days, until Sunday 28th. It was a challenge not for the faint-hearted, as this even included rowing through the night whilst the cleaning staff at The Gate worked around them!
As the team rowed, members of the public were invited to donate in support of the humanitarian aid projects of Human Appeal. Donations will support the charity’s emergency appeals. With the public’s support, Human Appeal’s teams are able to deploy aid immediately to provide hygiene kits, food, shelter and medical assistance.
It was a gruelling four days for Phil, the Human Appeal team and all of our many regional supporters who took part in the challenge over the course of the four days. Rowing over one million metres in total, the team managed to raise over £2000, which will go towards our emergency appeals. They say that small acts can make a big difference, and this example of fundraising is no different. Our motto at Human Appeal is ‘here for every human’, and everyone who took part in the World Longest Continual Row challenge succeeded in bringing together communities to help those in need.
