Tragedy strikes Libya: Entire families devastated

The Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) said, 'The believer's shade on the Day of Resurrection will be his charity.' (Hadith Al-Tirmidhi)

On September 11th, Storm Daniel brought unprecedented devastation to Libya, leaving heart-wrenching destruction in its path. The subsequent floods claimed the lives of 4,300 people, and the city of Derna bore the brunt of this catastrophe. The collapse of two dams in Derna sent torrents of powerful, devastating floods surging through the city, obliterating entire families in their wake. 8,500 individuals are still unaccounted for. Over 42,000 people have been displaced and find themselves in urgent need of assistance.

£100 - Emergency Survival Pack: Providing a Lifeline for Libyan Families

These Libyan communities are in dire need, particularly in Bayda and Derna. In the port city of Derna, home to 100,000 residents, the disaster has been nothing short of catastrophic. A quarter of the city has been decimated, with at least 2,217 buildings reduced to rubble and 2,176 structures severely damaged. The tragedy has led to the displacement of 30,000 people, while countless survivors anxiously await news about the 8,500 still unaccounted for.

A prolonged crisis

As these resilient families grapple with the scale of the tragedy they've endured, they are confronted with secondary crises. The floodwaters have left 98 schools shuttered and unable to provide education. Additionally, 11 schools have become refuges for displaced families. In Derna alone, 25,000 people remain displaced, adding to the challenges the city must overcome.

The healthcare system is in dire straits, with nearly half of the clinics and hospitals in and around Derna grappling with medicine and staff shortages. The situation is further exacerbated by the 2,400 expectant mothers preparing to give birth.
