Human Appeal timeline
A new charity is born!
Human Appeal was born in a small one bedroom flat in Manchester. We headed out to Sudan with emergency aid and launched our orphan sponsorship programme.
We evacuated women and children safely to Britain from Bosnia, began working with the UN on a 3-year plan to provide humanitarian assistance in 22 countries. We also built a dam in Mauritania after heavy flooding.
1993 saw us launch our transformative Empowering Women programme - specifically amongst female Palestinian refugees in Jordan. We brought them together to build confidence and learn the skills that could help them generate an income. It was a proud year.
No stopping us
We continued providing essential relief to the victims in war-torn Bosnia and worked tirelessly to immunise children in Lebanon and South Sudan against childhood diseases.
Growing and growing
Things start getting cramped in our ‘one-bedroom’ so, thanks to a very generous donor, we purchased a nice office in Manchester. 1995 also saw us achieving our 3-year plan with the UN.
Life giving support
We sent fresh meat (Qurbani) to Azerbaijan, Chad and Senegal during the festive season of Eid. We funded various safe water projects around the world too.
Epic help during Eid
We headed out to Palestine, Jordan, Mauritania, Sudan and Senegal, delivering warm clothing during the Eid period. Thanks to some fabulous donations, we were able to keep around 315 vulnerable women and children warm.
A time for giving
We helped to feed the fasting and provided clothing as well as Qurbani during Ramadan in Mauritania, Senegal, Chad and Azerbaijan, benefiting 2,835 people in total.
We delivered clean water projects to 10,000 people in Senegal and Azerbaijan, as well as in Chad’s rural area, saving lives and transforming the lives of women who would spend hours searching for water.
Bake, bake, bake!
We raised £13,500 to buy a bakery shop (and plenty of flour) in Kosovo. The bakery produced 750 fresh loaves of bread per hour, feeding many.
Immediate help in India
After an earthquake devastated Gujarat, we sent emergency relief to the victims. This included running trauma clinics, rebuilding houses and replacing a water tank, providing essential safe water to 20,000 people.
Emergency relief in Afghanistan
We launched an emergency relief campaign in Afghanistan, sending essential food parcels and providing medical help by sponsoring a 40 bed hospital in Qalat, Zabul Province.
From the heart
We sent 140 tonnes of medicine, food, milk, clean water and sanitary equipment to Baghdad. In 2003 Ethiopia suffered a devastating famine affecting millions – we provided food, medical equipment, tents and a water tank.
We helped 500,000 Tsunami victims in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. We also opened our first field office in Pakistan while, in the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, we started a programme to feed the fasting during Ramadan.
We supported hospitals in Sudan to help malnourished children, held a 6-city concert to help the Tsunami victims, and launched an appeal for the victims of the Kashmir earthquake, helping over 900 families.
Parcels for Palestine
We helped almost 16,500 Palestinians with food parcels in our urgent relief project ‘Palestine Under Siege'. After a severe food crisis in Niger, we also established four feeding centres in three districts for 30,000 malnourished children.
Fast relief in Pakistan
When devastating floods and storms hit Pakistan in ‘07, we were there. We provided early relief, including water and shelter, to 35,000 affected victims.
Muslim Charities Forum
Human Appeal has always had a strong voice so, in ‘08, we acted as one of the founding members of the Muslim Charities Forum. We also began to establish projects in Haiti for the first time.
Protecting the vulnerable
We work tirelessly to protect the vulnerable. In ‘09, we launched programmes to protect the underprivileged in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan, among other regions.
We responded fast after Pakistan’s devastating floods. Through our offices in Kashmir, Punjab and Baluchistan, we delivered parcels, clean water, bedding and tents, as well as a mobile clinic in SWAT region.
A busy year
When the Syria conflict erupted, we fed, clothed and treated the injured and vulnerable. We provided safe water to 50,000 people in Gaza and distributed food, water and medicine in Somalia, during the Eastern Horn of Africa drought.
Sounds of Light 2012
We held Sounds of Light 2012, an exciting three-city concert in: Birmingham, Manchester and London, featuring the likes of Maher Zain and Native Deen. A whopping £800,000 was raised for medical aid in Syria.
Make Bread Not War
We scaled up our efforts in Syria with the launch of our 'Make Bread Not War' campaign, feeding 10 million people. Sounds of Light 2013 was held in 12 cities across the UK and Ireland, raising a staggering £3.1m for Syria.
5.7 million people helped
We provided food, shelter, safe water and medicine for thousands of Syrians and worked on the ground in Gaza, delivering food, water, shelter, medicine and social support. We delivered WASH projects across Pakistan too.
£30 million raised
Thanks to your support, we provided 4 million Syrians with flour, WASH facilities, education and shelter; we worked tirelessly on the ground in Lesbos to help refugees; we rebuilt an entire village in Rakhine State, Myanmar; we provided essential aid in Nepal and Yemen; and we provided street children in Senegal with a place to call home. This is just a snapshot of all we were able to achieve.
